Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine

The Ohio State Medical Association Joint Advisory Committee on Sports Medicine serves to promote the health and safety of thousands of Ohio’s interscholastic athletes through close cooperation with the Ohio High School Athletic Association, Ohio Athletic Trainers Association and other sports medicine organizations. The primary focus is to address policy issues in sports medicine, physician coverage of OHSAA's state tournaments and playoffs. Additionally, the Committee brings special recognition to volunteer physicians for long and dedicated service to interscholastic athletes.

Committee Makeup

Chaired by Randall Wroble, MD, the Committee is comprised of 23 members:

  • 11 from OSMA
  • 1 from OSMA Medical Student Section
  • 3 from the Ohio High School Athletic Association
  • 4 from the Ohio Athletic Trainers Asscociation
  • 1 each from the Ohio Physician Therapy Association, Ohio Department of Education, and Ohio Emergency Medical Agency.

The Committee meets to address items of business, which are coordinated through the Committee Chair and OSMA staff person. There is no subcommittee structure, and the Committee as whole addresses all items of business.

Team Physician Awards

Started in 1975, the Ohio Outstanding Team Physician of the Year Award recognizes volunteer physicians for their dedicated service to Ohio's high school athletes. Physician candidates for the Outstanding Team Physician of the Year Award must have a minimum of 20 years service as a team physician for Ohio high schools; an endoresement from the physician' candidate's county medical society, district councilor or osteopathic academy; and an endorsement by school officials, coaches, trainers, civic officials, parents, fans, or others in the physician’s community.

The Team Physician Awards are presented at the school served by the award recipient, and the high school and physician determine the event, time, and place for the presentation.

The 2009 Award recipient is Richard L. Chamberlain, DO.

Nominations for the 2010 Team Physician Awards need to be completed and returned by April 30, 2010.
