The Professional Medical Coding Curriculum (PMCC) is a comprehensive classroom course geared toward obtaining the proficiency required to correctly code CPT®, HCPCS and ICD-9-CM for accurate reimbursement for professional services, and to prepare participants to take the AAPC Certified Professional Coder (CPC) examination. As practices face greater scrutiny from third-party auditors and higher expenses, they are looking to employ coders who have advanced knowledge of coding and can help guard against improper claim submission plus contribute to a higher rate of paid claims for the practice. Understandably, certification has often become mandated for practice compliance plans, hiring and advancement opportunities.

The federal health reform legislation signed into law in 2010 set in motion significant changes to the practice of medicine. These changes will transform health care delivery and affect not only how physicians and other providers are paid, but the structure of a medical practice as well.

With the constant changes in our medical system, who other than the person treating the patient is best qualified to determine the correct code to use when submitting claims for reimbursement? There are several different codes that can be used to describe the same procedure, but only the physician knows how to fully and accurately describe the services performed and the level of medical decision-making involved. Ultimately, it is the physician who has the final responsibility for the level of payment that service generates, regardless of how the code was selected. If your office staff does the coding and billing for you, and it is done incorrectly, the physician is still responsible.
