Dr. Karen King and the OSMA: Committed to similar causes
Dr. Karen King of Northwest Obstetrics and Gynecology Associates in Hilliard believes doctors and patients can work together to improve society. She feels that physicians can play a large role in helping to create a healthy community.
“I believe that medicine is connected to the rest of society and the community both through physicians and patients,” she says. “It’s important to find ways to become advocates for patients and the community.
“OSMA focuses on both of these,” she adds.
Dr. King has been an OSMA member since 1984. She became an OSMA student representative while in medical school at Toledo’s Medical College of Ohio. She was attracted to OSMA because the association holds similar beliefs as she holds.
“They’re always patient advocates,” she says. “Whether they are suggesting guidelines on suntan booths, bicycle and motorcycle helmets, or stop-smoking programs, they’re thinking about healthy communities. We also see benefits in the group practice as a whole.”
For the group, OSMA provides education and financial savings to Northwest obstetricians. For one thing, all OSMA members have collectively saved nearly $2.5 million in workers’ comp fees through group purchasing.
On the education side, OSMA provides training for Northwest staff on all areas of the revenue cycle. In addition, Northwest obstetricians receive a 6 percent discount on athenahealth's billing and practice management solution. The discount is not available to non-members.
“OSMA works hard on our behalf in many ways,” Dr. King says. “Overall, the voice of the few isn’t heard but the voice of the many can’t be ignored.”
That adds up to healthy communities across Ohio, and healthy savings for OSMA members.
