From legal services, to HR, to legislative issues, OSMA staff members have the answers.
When Dr. Matthew Stone moved from his home state of Pennsylvania to attend Ohio University’s College of Osteopathic Medicine he knew he was going to become a physician. He probably also knew he could succeed in most professional careers; however, Dr. Stone sought to be a “working class doctor.”
So Dr. Stone is delighted that he can call on OSMA professionals for all those other services to support the Family Practice Associates of SW Ohio in Butler County. From legal services, to HR, to legislative needs, Dr. Stone and his colleagues call on OSMA for answers to their questions.
“OSMA is a big part of what we’re doing. It’s my liaison between the medical practice and so many other areas we need. When something comes up, big issues or small, we can call on OSMA,” he says.
In the legal area, Dr. Stone says OSMA “is like having an attorney on staff. When there is a question on the language of a policy or productivity, OSMA explains it to us.”
Family Practice Associates also relies on OSMA for it Workers' Compensation coverage. Last year participating OSMA physicians and practices saved nearly $2.5 million in workers’ comp fees.
“Our office manager can also get great information and education from OSMA,” he says. “She gets the language, legal and practice requirements we need to move forward.”
The practice can also buy its malpractice and disability insurance at discounted prices as part of OSMA, Dr. Stone says. “It allows us to unite for buying power. It takes an organization like OSMA to bring everyone together.” Participating physicians receive a 5 percent discount plus can earn an additional 5 percent discount based on practice efficiency.
“I also like the fact that OSMA focuses only on Ohio practices,” he says. “Overall OSMA knows the pressures physicians are under and helps make sure we are current on state requirements. They serve doctors in our practice and do a good job of being in the trenches with us.”
And for a self-described working class doctor, “knowing that a complete team of professionals is there when I need them” can be a tremendous relief.
“We’ve seen many benefits due to OSMA for some time now,” he says. “We talk directly to the people who know the issues.”
