Medical Mutual of Ohio Company Overview

Medical Mutual of Ohio (MMO) is proud of the fact it is Ohio home-grown. Founded in 1934, MMO is headquartered in Cleveland and is the largest health insurance company based in Ohio. The company also has a primary office in Toledo and local provider contracting representatives and marketing personnel in Cincinnati, Columbus and Dayton. All of the company’s customer service representatives are located in Ohio.

Most of MMO’s 2,900 staff members are located in Cleveland (1,400 plus) and Toledo (500 plus). The remaining employees are assigned to the various offices in Ohio, South Carolina and Georgia. The bulk of MMO’s $2 billion in revenue is generated in the state of Ohio, which is where the majority of its 4.2 million customers reside.

MMO handles traditional lines of insurance, as well as managed care (SuperMed) and Medicare managed care (Advantage plans). Medical Mutual’s SuperMed Plus was the first PPO in the nation to be accredited by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). The company’s presence is the most significant in the northern end of Ohio since it was created with the merger in 1986 of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Northern Ohio (Cleveland-based) and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Northwestern Ohio (Toledo-based).

However, MMO is moving to establish strong ties in central Ohio. Although traditionally MMO has catered to the small group market, for several years now it has been in the process of positioning itself as a player for the lucrative government contracts in Ohio.

In addition, in the past three years, Medical Mutual has expanded its scope beyond Ohio, concentrating on the Southeast and the Midwest regions of the country. MMO’s acquisitions in the Southeast include a PPO in Georgia and an HMO and PO in South Carolina. Its long-range plans include national expansion through its insurance subsidiary Consumers Life.

The Chief Medical Officer is Robert E. Rzewnicki, M.D., a board-certified rheumatologist who has been affiliated with MMO since 1987. Dr. Rzewnicki has served as the medical director since 1993 and is responsible for overseeing the nearly 100 actively-practicing physicians who serve as Medical Mutual’s physician advisors.

Medical Mutual of Ohio e-Portal

Medical Mutual offers a secure online provider portal for all network providers. The service will allow you to have access whenever your practice needs it, and whenever it is convenient for you. You can view current demographic information on your practice, including office locations and the associated remittance locations, as well as make changes as needed.

In addition, the ePortal will allow you to view your fee schedule online for the services you bill, as well as receive claim payments directly deposited into your bank account with electronic funds transfer (EFT).

The ePortal is secure because multiple safeguard protections have been built into the system. It allows the practice to decide who has access to the data, how many individuals can view it and who can make changes to it. One individual is designated as a Primary Access Administrator (PAA) and is responsible for registering tax identification numbers. Only the PAA can approve who can access the account and what they can view.
