A physician is not permitted to issue a state of Ohio approved written recommendation to use medical marijuana until the physician has obtained a certificate to recommend from the State Medical Board of Ohio. A requirement of obtaining a certificate to recommend is “the applicant must have competed at least two hours (per year) of continuing medical education in a course or courses certified by the Ohio State Medical Association (OSMA) or the Ohio Osteopathic Association (OOA) that assist physicians in both of the following:


  1. Diagnosing qualifying medical conditions as defined in Ohio Revised Code Section 3796.01.  
  2. Treating qualifying medical conditions with medical marijuana, including the characteristics of medical marijuana and possible drug interactions.”

Accredited provider needs to complete:

  2. Content Attestation (download form>>)
If approved, a formal confirmation will be sent to the applicant.
The applicant must provide proof of OSMA certification to the State Medical Board of Ohio to receive final approval of the medical marijuana CME offering. To prevent potential conflict of interests, the OSMA will not review any course content nor designate any courses for AMA PRA Category 1™ credit.
