Young Physician Section: Your Input Needed!

The Young Physician Section (YPS) of OSMA would like YPS member thoughts on starting a series of informal, virtual gatherings to address a variety of issues of importance to you in support of your professional and personal life. These will be private, virtual meetings open only to OSMA YPS members.

In planning for topics for these sessions, we would like your feedback into the structure of the meetings and we’re looking for volunteers to participate.

Our first proposed topic was submitted by a number of YPS members at our annual meeting this spring:

Training/Early Career Practice & Parenting: Is It Possible to Do Both?

In a recent ABMS Insights Summer 2023 article, “ABMS Member Boards’ Leave Policies Help Residents Care for Their Own Families” it was explained how they called on their 24 Member Boards to allow for a minimum of six weeks for parental, caregiver and medical leave without exhausting vacation, sick leave or extending training. The OSMA commends these actions in support of physician well-being. However, it leaves the question: Is It Possible to Do Both? The idea of having children and parenting during medical training or even early in your career is daunting; however, it can also be challenging to delay starting a family until after training is completed. This informal virtual meeting will share personal stories from physicians who have made the decision to parent during their training, during early in their career and late in their career, and the many issues and insights they experienced – followed by open Q&A and discussion.
