Asking the Right Questions in Head and Neck Cancer Research
Summer Scholar, Eiman Stiffler, studied cranial free flap reconstruction at University Hospitals.
This summer, OSMA Foundation Summer Scholar, Eiman Stiffler, worked with the Otolaryngology Department at University Hospitals under the mentorship of Dr. Claudia Cabrera. His research focused on patients who undergo cranial free flap reconstruction for head and neck cancer and complex craniofacial defects.
Through this work, Eiman learned how carefully framed research questions can lead to information that may one day support surgeons and their patients.

Learning from a Mentor
Eiman also watched Dr. Cabrera work with surgeons and residents throughout the summer. Her example showed him the importance of teamwork, careful decision-making and keeping patients in mind throughout the research process.

Caring for Patients in Ohio
Eiman has lived in Ohio his entire life. The opportunity to care for patients in the state was an important reason he chose Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine. His experience at University Hospitals gave him the chance to see how research, mentorship and patient care can work together.
“This summer brought a goal into sharper focus: I hope to practice medicine that keeps patients at the center and lets careful research inform decisions at the bedside.” |
Time to Focus on the Work
The Summer Scholars stipend allowed Eiman to devote his summer to this research experience and to devote his summer weeks fully to that pursuit.
“I am sincerely grateful to the donors who made it possible. Their generosity gave me time to learn from patients, mentors, and data, and I will carry what it taught me into every patient encounter ahead.” |
