2018-2019 Budget Proposal Highlights

Listed here are newly-introduced state budget initiatives that seek to make a number of fiscal and policy changes relevant to health care. The OSMA will work to advocate for physicians as these changes are negotiated upon over the next several months. 

SB 319 Prevents Penalty for Not Prescribing Opioids
February 21, 2017
In fall 2016, Federal Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced it would remove and revise questions assessing pain management from the Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey, to eliminate this financial pressure to potentially overprescribe opioids. CMS has since indicated that it would develop alternative questions related to pain and communications related to pain between patient and provider.

​Taking the Risks to Heart: Misdiagnosis of Heart Disease

Heart disease is the leading killer of women, responsible for one in every four female deaths, and this danger was highlighted by the tragic death of actress Carrie Fisher in late 2016. But almost two-thirds of women who die suddenly from heart disease had no previous symptoms.*

OSMA Symposium Spotlight: Prevention Strategies

An important aspect of managing a successful medical practice is leveraging the “what if” – or applying a certain amount of focus to prevention of mistakes and negative outcomes, and their impacts on the practice should they arise. As many already know, it is not a healthy management strategy to think: “It will never happen to us,” which could result in feeling under-prepared in a high-stakes situation.

Governor’s Budget Proposal Seeks to Keep Medicaid Expansion

Ohio Gov. John Kasich has introduced a biennium budget proposal that keeps Medicaid expansion in place and provides more support for primary care as the state moves to a value-based care model of paying for medical services.

The governor, in what will be his final state budget before he leaves office in early 2018, also proposed to continue spending about $1 billion in each of the next two years to address opioid addiction and pledged addition funding to combat infant mortality.

Updates on the Ohio Compounding Rules

Earlier this month, the State of Ohio Board of Pharmacy finalized its rules for compounding in the state and issued guidance on both the compounding rules and recent changes to the laws surrounding Terminal Distributor of Dangerous Drugs (TDDD) licenses.
